Moms of this number of children tend to get the most sleep (surprisingly)

Moms of this number of children tend to get the fruchtwein sleep (surprisingly)Moms of this number of children tend to get the most sleep (surprisingly)One in three Americans doesnt get enough sleep according to a recent study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The American Academy of Sleepand The Sleep Research Society recommends healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 60, sleep at least seven hours each night. The Director of the CDC s Division of Population health reports,As a nation, we are not getting enough sleep, said Wayne Giles, M.D., director of CDCs Division of Population Health. Lifestyle changes such as going to bed at the saatkorn time each night rising at the same time each morning and turning off or removing televisions, computers, mobile devices from the bedroom, can help people get the healthy sleep they need.Considering, how big a role distractions play in keeping us up at night, it follows that moms are having considerable trouble obtain ing quality sleep.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraA new study published by Amerisleep, analyzing data from The American Time Use Survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which included a sample size of 31, 621 individuals, posits that mothers of three get the least amount of sleep of any other demographic observed in the report. Oddly enough, however, mothers of five children were found to be the most well-rested, securing an average of 9.0 hours a night, which is two hours more than the recommended amount. The Parents with the worst sleepBy the time parents have five children, theyve figured out a way to maximize sleep despite the demands of their busy lives whereas parents who have three children are generally outnumbered for the first time and that may take away their ability to sleep as long, Nicole Canon told Today Parents.Today was actually the first to break the story, in their segment, detailing why moms of five have the best shot at consistent good nights rest. The strange thing is, as indexed in the chart above, while its true mothers of five children score the most sleep, most parents receive more than the amount of sleep recommended by medical experts. These results varied by gender, but only fractionally. The average father of one achieved around 8.8 hours of sleep per night, whereas the average dad of five got something closer to 8.4 hours of sleep a night.Moms with multiple children were also found to multitask more, and also engage in a bit more napping than dads did. The other factor that notably influenced quality sleep for parents was the ages of the children in the home. Dads with daughters between the ages of one and five and sons between the ages of 13 and 17 got the least sleep of the male respondents. Moms with daughters of the ages two and under and sons under the age of one got the least sleep of the female respondents. The diff erence between these metrics owes themselves principally to responsibility and neuroscience. A recent study cited in the study titled, Do Women Need More Sleep Than Men? Published by the National Sleep Foundation, list the various factors that often sees women requiring more sleep than men. Some of them are neurological, like the studied tendency to multitask, others are things like, being woken up and moved around on the bed by the partner, (men tend to be larger than women) or worrying about problems and losing sleep as a result. Moreover, in the latest study, women were found to spend about an hour more each day on household activities then men do, which might explain why women clock in 12 more minutes of sleep than their male counterparts. Some have pointed out that there were potential variables noticeably absent from the new study. For example, an independent study conducted by The Pew Research Center, revealed that, on balance, working moms receive about five hours less sleep than stay at home moms do.Even still the latest study offers a pretty concrete explanation for the broad findings. A sizeable portion of mothers of five children observed in the survey has grown accustomed to balancing and operating amidst the chaos. The other portion made a concerted effort to achieve quality rest once their broods expanded, in order to efficiently care for them. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Become a Private Pilot

How to Become a Private PilotHow to Become a Private PilotThe private pilot certificate (or private pilot license) has been the most commonly sought-after pilot certificate for years. Some people seek a private pilot certificate purely as a hobby or sport, while others desire the convenience of aircraft travel for vacations or to visit family members. Some private pilots and aircraft owners use their airplane as a primary mode of transportation to business meetings or events, and for some, its a step in the road toward becoming an airline pilot. If youve decided that the private pilot certificate is right for you, then these are the next steps.Private pilots are trained well enough to navigate a small aircraft through the nations airspace by themselves. While in training, a private pilot learns aircraft maneuvers, navigation techniques, emergency procedures, and cross-country flight planning. Private pilot training is more intense than training for a sports pilot certificate or a recr eational pilot certificate, but not quite as extensive as for a commercial pilot certificate. Here are the steps for how to become a private pilot 01Make aya Youre EligibleMake sure you meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the regulations. See FAR 61.103 for more information. A private pilot applicant needs to be at least 17 years old, able to read, speak and understand English, successfully complete the flight training requirements and the knowledge exam. In the end, a private pilot applicant will need to pass a practical exam that consists of a verbal exam and a flight test.02Obtain a Student Pilot CertificateYoull begin by obtaining a student pilot certificate (and typically an aviation medical certificate at the same time). You have three vorkaufsrechts for obtaining a student pilot certificateYou can get your student pilot certificate and aviation medical certificate at the same time at the aviation medical examiners office when you go in for your appointment. The docu ment that the examiner gives you after you successfully complete your medical exam will be both a student pilot certificate and medical exam in one. Itis the most common optionsince the medical certificate is required before a student can solo the aircraft. The second option is to go to an FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) and submit an application for a student pilot certificate by itself.Lastly (and much less commonly), a person can submit an application for a student pilot certificate to an FAA examiner.03Pass a Third-Class Aviation Medical ExamObtain an aviation medical certificate. If you havent already passed your aviation medical exam, youll need to have one done before you can solo the airplane. Solo flight can happen quicker than you think, so its best not to put off the medical exam. To exercise privileges of a private pilot, a person is required to have a current 3rd Class FAA-issued medical certificate.04Find an InstructorIf you dont already have a flight instru ctor or flight school in mind, check at your local airport. If your airport has a flight school or Fixed-Base Operation (FBO), check there first. If not, ask around at the terminal or other business on the field. Its a small community, and most of the time, there are flight instructors that are eager to teach.05Take the FAA Written ExamSome flight schools and instructors will require you to successfully complete the FAA Private Pilot Written Exam before ever stepping foot in an airplane. Others will let you fly as much as youd like while you study at home for the test. Either way, the test must be completed before you can take the final private pilot check ride for your certificate. Its best to take it early on- flying is easier when you have the background knowledge. It just makes sense. Dont put it off.06abflug FlyingYoull need to gain the required flight experience. Youll start by learning basic maneuvers, such as takeoff, landing, turns, climbs, and descents. A student needs at least 10 hours to solo the aircraft, but many people take more time to learn how to fly the airplane- while the primary focus might be learning how to land the airplane, youll also need to know emergency procedures, how to communicate on the radios, etc. After your first solo, youll work on solo cross-country flights youll learn navigation techniques and more difficult maneuvers. From there, youll fine-tune your piloting skills for the final exam- the check ride.07Take the Checkride (FAA Practical Exam)Youll need a certain amount of experience to be eligible for the check ride. For example, a private pilot applicant is required to have at least 40 hours of flight time, of which 20 are from an instructor, and 10 are solo flights. More specifically, youll need at least 3 hours of cross-country training with your instructor, including 3 hours of night flying, one cross-country that is over 100 nautical miles, 10 takeoffs, and landings, and 3 hours of basic instrument training. On top o f that, youre required to have 10 hours of solo flying, which includes 5 hours of a solo cross-country flight, and one cross-country that is over 150 nautical miles with landings at three different airports. The check ride is given by a designated FAA examiner, and it consists of a verbal exam and a flight exam. The exam can last from about two hours to 6 hours, depending on your level of knowledge and the examiners methods. The ground portion is usually done first and can last from 30 minutes to a few hours. If the verbal exam is successful, the examiner will then conduct the flight portion of the exam, which typically lasts 1-2 hours.08Get Your LicenseUpon successful completion of your FAA Practical Test, the examiner will assist you in filling out the FAA paperwork online. Youll have to pay them (rates vary so check with your instructor beforehand). The examiner will give you a temporary private pilot certificate to use while you wait for the official FAA certificate to arrive in the mail.

This CEO dyes her hair brown to be taken seriously

This CEO dyes her hair brown to be taken seriouslyThis CEO dyes her hair brown to be taken seriouslyTo be taken seriously at work by people in positions of power, women sometimes feel like they have to go to extreme lengths to conceal and modify their appearance - all to level the playing field in male-dominated industries. On Monday, Eileen Carey, the Silicon Valley CEO of Glassbreakers, shared one such story, tellingthe BBC that she dyes her blonde hair brunette and wears glasses, having received negative feedback about her looks.I was told for this raise of funds, that it would be to my benefit to dye my hair brown because there was a stronger pattern recognition of brunette women CEOs, she told the BBC, citing how geschftsleben colleagues would compare her to Elizabeth Holmes, a blonde CEO whose failed blood-testing company is hemorrhaging millions to settle lawsuits.Carey elended that the first time she received this advice was from a woman in venture capital.Blondes considered less competent at work in surveyResearch actually finds that theres a stronger pattern recognition with blonde, not brunette women, in corporate leadership positions. Almost half of female CEOs at SP 500 companies are blonde, according to a hair-color stereotyping study. But perhaps the business contacts giving this advice to Carey are alluding to a stereotype of blondes being more likable and less competent than brunettes - thats a leadership myth that continues to persist in the minds of some men. In a study where men were shown the saatkorn women with different-colored hair, men said that the blonde versions of the same women were less competent and independent, yet the blonde versions were perceived to be more warm and attractive.Dr. Jennifer Berdahl, one of the researchers in this study, called this bias the Glinda-the-Good-Witch effect, whereBarbie can be CEO as long as she is young and/or docile because blonde women are not only assumed to be younger than their darker haired counterparts, but are also judged to be less independent-minded and less willing take a stand than other women and than men.Berdahls analysis aligns with Careys personal experience.Being a brunette helps me to look a bit older and I needed that, I felt, in order to be taken seriously, Carey said, citing examples of being more likely to be flirted with at work when she had blonde hair. For me to be successful in this tech industry space, Id like to draw as little attention as possible, especially in any sort of sexual way, she said.Female tech CEOs face subjective criticism like this all the timeThe margin for error in any venture-capital-backed startup is razor-thin. But female entrepreneurs leading startups face additional hurdles from investors who question their ability and judgment and are less likely to look like them. In the U.S., women only make up an estimated 7% of all venture capitalists in charge of deciding if your startup will get the funds it needs to survive another d ay. A 2017 field study of venture capitalist interactions between male and female entrepreneurs found that female entrepreneurs were more likely to get asked how they would not lose while male entrepreneurs were asked how they would win. That difference in the framing of ideas led to female entrepreneurs getting less funding from investors.A recent experiment proved that identifying as a man can make all the difference in startup success. In a recent Fast Company article, Witchsyco-founders Penelope Gazin and Kate Dwyer said they noticed that clients were using a condescending tone of Okay, girls . . . and werent responding to emails in a timely manner. So they decided to see if adding a fictional male co-founder would make a difference. It did. Once Gazin and Dwyer introduced clients to a fictional male co-founder named Keith Mann, client interactions became much more productive. It would take me days to get a response, but Keith could not only get a response and a status update, bu t also be asked if he wanted anything else or if there was anything else that Keith needed help with, Dwyer said.Carey and the Witchsy co-founders took actions to take back control of factors outside of their control, and succeeded. But having to regulate ones appearance for the sake of judgmental investors shows how limiting and insular the ideal startup leader is perceived to be.

Are You Ready The Value of Preparing for Meetings

Are You Ready The Value of Preparing for Meetings Are You Ready The Value of Preparing for Meetings How do you prepare for big meetings or presentations? Has that changed over time, or do you have certain routines you always follow? In speaking with many fellow business owners, Ive found that there are a number of preparation tips  that most entrepreneurs agree will help you put your best foot forward. 1. Know Your Audience Who are you meeting with? Have you done a Google search on them? If you didnt set the agenda, who did â€" and whats on the agenda? Its always best not to be surprised or blindsided at a meeting. The more you know about the people youre meeting with â€" including their backgrounds, their needs, and how they define success â€" the more productive your discussions will be. 2. Eat, Sleep, and Be Merry Nothing beats a good nights rest and a full stomach when it comes to meeting  preparation.  A warm smile and friendly conversation will go a long way in building rapport and, ultimately, a solid relationship â€" which is the foundation for everything that follows. Of course, you wont be in the mood for chitchat and smiles if youre hungry or tired, will you? If youre in a pinch, grab some coffee and an energy bar before you start. It beats hearing your stomach growl and fighting yawns during a meeting. 3. Practice Makes (Almost) Perfect Rehearsals arent just for plays. Whether you think of a meeting as a performance or not, its your job to both inform and entertain your audience members. Nobodys perfect, but you should be comfortable enough with your material that it flows naturally and youre not relying on notes during the meeting. You dont want to be reading off a script â€" you want to be having direct, engaging conversations. 4. Follow Up and Follow Through If you tell the people you meet with youll get back to them on a particular issue, make sure you actually do it. Keeping promises goes a long way and reinforces the quality image and brand you want to project. Personally, I find that, if I write things down, they get done. Find a system that works for you to make sure you always close the loop in the end. - These steps may seem simple, but youd be amazed how many people dont invest the time  and effort  necessary to get into the heads and hearts of their target audience. You want to leave a lasting impression as a consummate professional; you should never let a meeting go to waste â€" especially when it can be a challenge to set one up in the first place. So, take the time you need to be prepared, because even meetings you dont initially think are important may end up putting you in front of people who can help you in the future. Though they might not hire you or buy your product this time, they will remember you for later â€" if you make a great impression, that is. Keep sharpening that axe; you never know when youll need it. *Ed. note: Plenty of people credit Lincoln with this quote, but its difficult â€" if not impossible â€" to verify whether or not he ever actually said it.

Can Your Resume and Cover Letter Use a Little Passion

Can Your Resume and Cover Letter Use a Little Passion Can Your Resume and Cover Letter Use a Little Passion? Can Your Resume and Cover Letter Use a Little Passion Most of us are drawn toward people who are passionate about their work. Their enthusiasm can inspire us to do bigger and better things, spur us into action, or just make us feel good about ourselves. That's why someone like Oprah Winfrey has been successful for nearly 25 years. That's how Martin Luther King Jr. changed the way we view ourselves. And that's why a sports team that wins a big game against great odds inspires more than just its regular fans. In short, they exude passion, and they can ignite passion in us. Could your resume and cover letter use a little passion? If you're not getting calls for interviews, take a good look at how you're presenting yourself in those critical career documents. To see if your resume needs a dose of passion, ask yourself these three questions: 1. What is it about my career and my target jobs that excites me? Is there some aspect of your work that you truly enjoy, that you know you're good at, and that doesn't even feel like work? Maybe even something that makes you look forward to getting into the office on Monday while you're spending a quiet Sunday at home? 2. Do I express enthusiasm for what I like to do and the results I deliver? Consider these two ways of expressing your value in a cover letter: In my seven years as a financial analyst at XYZ Company, I made critical recommendations on corporate investments in other countries. I enjoy sifting through data to assemble clear, coherent reports to executives and corporate boards of directors. That's part of what made me a successful financial analyst at XYZ Company, where I used that data to make critical recommendations on successful investments in other countries. Which one shows more passion? 3. What words do I use to express my enthusiasm, skills, and accomplishments? Strong action words canreflect your passion for your work, and help convey the message that you'll bring that passion to a new job. In the two examples below, one conveys just the facts, while the other adds a little something extra: Led $1.5 million project to replace 2,500 corporate desktop and laptop computers, finishing 2 months ahead of deadline. Spearheaded and oversaw $1.5 million desktop and laptop replacement project, finishing 2 months ahead of deadline. When you're talking about your career accomplishments and your abilities to do the job you're applying for, give the hiring manager a reason to call you for an interview. Being qualified isn't enough, since others are likely to have the same or even a higher level of qualifications. But a positive outlook is contagious, and injecting a little passion into your resume and cover letter can grab the hiring manager's attention and improve your chances of landing an interview.

3 Emerging Trends Automotive Engineering

3 Emerging Trends Automotive Engineering 3 Emerging Trends Automotive Engineering Not too many people know automotive trends the way the staff does at The Ohio State Universitys Center for Automotive Research (OSU CAR). This interdisciplinary research center at OSUs College of Engineering focuses on advanced electric propulsion and energy storage systems, engines and alternative fuels, intelligent transportation and vehicular communication systems, autonomous vehicles, vehicle chassis systems, and vehicle safety. One of the biggest trends right now in automotive engineering is improving engine efficiency and fuel economy, says Giorgio Rizzoni, director of OSU CAR. This includes downsizing, down-speeding, direct fuel injection, and boosting. Other engineering trends focus on improving transmissions (adding speeds), accessory load reduction through the intelligent energy management of other vehicle components, vehicle electrification, hybridization, improved battery management systems, new battery chemistries, and power electronics. Weight reduction in vehicle subsystems is also being tested by using lightweight structures made from alternative materials such as aluminum, magnesium, composites, plastics, and multi-material construction, adds Rizzoni. OSU CAR battery aging laboratory. Image: OSU CAR Battery Systems Battery management systems are being designed to meet performance, life, and warranty goals for both batteries and their monitoring and management systems. Automakers need to fully understand how varying operational limits affect the life of battery systems through extensive testing and modeling, followed by developing sophisticated algorithms to track and predict various parameters, such as state of charge and state of health through the life of the battery, comments Rizzoni. In order to expand battery operating range and reduce costs, some researchers are designing and testing new battery chemistries and subsystems. Advanced chemistries could allow batteries to operate through greater temperature extremes, last longer, and reduce weight and cost. Other efforts are being made to reduce the cost of the ancillary systems, such as cooling, to further reduce the total cost of the battery system. Downsizing and Turbocharging The two main benefits in downsizing an internal combustion engine are thermodynamic and mechanical. From a thermodynamic point of view, the engine operation will move towards higher loads, at which the engine efficiency is higher, says Rizzoni. From the mechanical point of view, the positive aspect lies in the reduction of the friction in the piston units, together with the reduction of the number of cylinders. Downsized engines are lighter than conventional engines, thereby reducing vehicle mass and the improving vehicle fuel consumption. Turbocharging recovers the energy of the exhaust gasses to increase the inducted charge, therefore increasing the power-to-displacement ratio. A downsized and turbocharged engine has the potential to have the same or better performance as a non-downsized, normally aspirated engine, with the advantage of a significant increase of fuel efficiency, says Rizzoni. Advanced Combustion Modes Engineers are working to increase the efficiency of internal combustion engines by developing several advanced combustion modes. One of these modes is called (homogeneous charge compression ignition) HCCI. In the HCCI combustion, a highly homogenized mixture of air, fuel, and combustion products from the previous cycle is auto-ignited by compression. This combustion mode aims at combining the advantages of modern diesel and gasoline combustion processes, namely low emissions and high efficiency, states Rizzoni. Another research trend targets ways to recover the energy that is normally dissipated through the coolant and the exhaust gas systems of automotive powertrains using innovative waste heat recovery devices. These systems can convert thermal energy into mechanical or electrical energy, thus increasing the overall efficiency of the vehicle. Organic Rankine cycle, thermoelectric systems, turbocompounding, and recuperative thermal management systems all have potential for significantly increase engine efficiencies. A smaller but still significant aspect of fuel-efficiency research is called intelligent energy management. This ability to more intelligently control the accessory loads in a vehiclesuch as the alternator or power steering, etc.will also contribute to better gas mileage, says Rizzoni. With smarter control of these loads and the addition of stop-start technology there can be significant increases in fuel economy, with small or no increase in total vehicle cost. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. A downsized and turbocharged engine has the potential to have the same or better performance as a non-downsized, normally aspirated engine.Giorgio Rizzoni, director, OSU CAR

Five Marketing Careers that Didnt Exist Before the Internet

Five Marketing Careers that Didn’t Exist Before the Internet Five Marketing Careers that Didn’t Exist Before the Internet Before the Internet advertising was done primarily on television, print, radio and outdoor billboards. Marketing consisted of public relations, events and sponsorships. In the age of the Internet options for marketing have expanded. Almost 30 percent of corporate marketing budgets go toward digital marketing, and those budgets are growing every year. With people spending more time on computers and mobile devices instead of in front of the television, it makes sense for companies to spend more online. That’s good news for people who love technology but don’t have degrees in computer science. Careers in marketing are a great fit for people with liberal arts or non-technical majors, and digital marketing is no exception. Why you might be a good fit for digital marketing: You Can See the Big Picture They key to a successful career in digital marketing is the ability to see the big picture combined with the ability to focus on the details. Being on a digital marketing team is like being part of a giant puzzle. If the whole of the puzzle is promoting your company’s services or products, you must know how your piece of the puzzle contributes to the overall picture. You Listen to Metrics On the Web everything is measurable. Another key to a career in digital marketing is the ability to focus on numbers and make decisions based on what the numbers tell you. Your ability to keep the big picture in mind while looking at metrics will allow you to suggest changes that will improve performance. Perhaps the awesome blog posts you wrote as a content manager are not performing well, but the SEO on the blog is lacking, or it wasn’t promoted on social media. Successful online marketing is truly a team effort. Things you need to know going in:   Every company does it differently Every company has different titles and digital marketing skill breakdowns. At a small company one person could conceivably fulfill all five of these roles. Large companies and agencies generally hire full-time specialists or whole teams in each area. Know the tools Every company uses a different set of tools. Before you interview, see if you can find out what tools they use, and research them by visiting the websites and watching product demonstrations. As an employee you’ll likely have tool providers pitching you frequently, and you may be involved in product evaluations. Learning never stops Digital marketing is a fast-changing field and new tools and social platforms are introduced all the time. Therefore it’s a good idea to stay abreast of trends by reading industry blogs. Your reading should be weighted toward reputable publications based in the U.S. (if you live there) rather than individual bloggers. There are many spammy online marketing blogs based overseas that provide incomplete or incorrect information. If you want to be a pro, get your information from the pros who work for reputable companies. A good rule of thumb to see if a publication is reputable is to find out if they host or have authors who speak at conferences in your country. Once you get a job as digital marketer, you may be sent to one of these conferences to learn and network. Five Careers in Digital Marketing 1. Social Media Sample titles: Community Manager, Social Media Manager, Social Media Specialist Social Media is all about getting the word out there and engaging directly with customers. Social media outlets include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, YouTube and blogs. A social media manager might post on behalf of the company to some or all of these outlets. You’ll need to know how to post images, how to craft compelling short posts, and you’ll learn how to design campaigns that focus on a single topic over time.  If you love connecting with people online, consider a career in social media. Tools: Hootsuite Bit.ly SocialFlow Spredfast Adobe Social Oracle Social Cloud Sprout Social Publications: Social Media Examiner TechCrunch 2. PPC (or Paid Search) Sample Titles: PPC Manager, PPC Analyst As a PPC manager, you’ll be in charge of placing ads on search engines and other performance-based media channels such as Google, Yahoo/Bing and Facebook. You’ll look at monthly, weekly and daily budgets and try to get the most out of your company’s ad spending by optimizing keyword bids and ad copy across locations and devices. If you have a love for analyzing numbers and enjoy looking at graphs and charts but can also think about keywords and their many permutations, you could be a great PPC manager. It could also be a great fit for people with knowledge of finance or accounting who would like to be more creative in their work. Tools: Google AdWords Google AdSense Marin Software Kenshoo Adobe Media Optimizer DoubleClick Publications: Search Engine Land Search Engine Watch Search Engine Journal Google Inside AdWords 3. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) SEO Manager, SEO Specialist While PPC is about paid search placement, SEO is about “organic” search placement: the search results that aren’t in the “sponsored” link sections at the top and right rail of the search results page (SERP).  The closer a company’s links appear toward the top of the page for a given search query, the more likely it is that users click. SEO specialists understand techniques for acquiring relevant traffic from search engines such as building links, optimizing title tags and making URL recommendations.   The search engine algorithms change frequently, so they  stay abreast of changes by reading blogs and industry publications. At some companies, SEO and PPC can be done by the same person. You’ll be great at SEO if you love going into code, making tweaks, and tracking results over time.   You’ll also need a good understanding of language. Tools: Google Webmaster Tools Bing Webmaster Tools BrightEdge Google Analytics Conductor Moz SearchMetrics Majestic SEO Publications: Search Engine Land Moz blog SEO Book Google Inside Search 4. Digital (or Web) Analytics Titles: Digital Analyst, Web Analytics Manager Originally focused on analyzing traffic to a website- where it comes from and what people do there- Web analytics expanded to digital analytics when social media grew in importance. Digital analysts look at the traffic to a website or social pages, what pages people visit, how long they stay, where they come from, what devices they use and whether they “convert” (buy a product or sign up for something). That information is used to determine what tactics can be applied to generate more conversions. Digital analysis is a good fit for people who would enjoy researching behavior and recommending changes based on what they find out. Tools: Google Analytics Adobe Analytics (formerly Omniture) IBM Enterprise One (formerly Coremetrics) Webtrends comScore Digital Analytix Resources: Google Analytics Blog Digital Analytics Association Web Analytics Demystified 5. Content Marketing Sample Titles: Content Strategist, Content Manager Roles in content marketing tend to vary based on what business the company is in, particularly if the company’s customers are consumers (B2C) or businesses (B2B).   Content marketers determine what type of content is the best way to get people interested in a particular service, product or event and take the steps to getting that content created and posted. Content types can include copy, blogs, articles, video, social media posts, downloadable documents such as e-books and white papers, webinars, case studies, emails and newsletters. Content marketers may need to know at least some HTML or CSS as well as keyword-based SEO techniques. Content marketing is a great fit for people who love to read and are good with language. Tools: WordPress Drupal Joomla Marketo Pardot Eloqua MailChimp Constant Contact SilverPop Hubspot Resources: Content Marketing Institute Marketing Land Top Rank Blog Copy Blogger Digital marketing budgets are growing 10 percent or more a year. As budgets grow, companies need to hire more people to work in social media, PPC, SEO, digital analytics and content marketing. Over time your job might expand to include two or more of these areas, or you could end up managing a whole team of specialists. With your eye on the big picture and an ability to listen to metrics, you’ll be prepared for a long and varied career.

Every type of coworker youll ever have (and how to handle them)

Every type of coworker you'll ever have (and how to handle them) Every type of coworker you'll ever have (and how to handle them) It’s 6:30 am on a Monday. You get out of bed, exhausted, and slip on your trusty black work pants, button-down shirt and watch, then head out the door to your car. When you arrive at the office building, you swipe the access card that hangs around your neck, get on the slow elevator and wait as it climbs up to the third floor. Then, you sit down at a cubicle marked with your name to start your day.As you log into Windows, you pause to think about how the day could turn out. Suddenly, an array of potential characters and thoughts come to mind. Will John talk down to you today as he does every single other day? Ugh, it just gets under your skin. Or, will you run into Kim, who seems to be keeping a tight leash on you ever since the CEO noticed your skills on that last account? Will Tanya burst your bubble with “the truth” as she sees it?Work doesn’t have to be a drab experience filled with negativity and a fight for survival. When you were first  hired for your job, you were so e xcited, remember? What happened? You don’t have the right tools to dealWhen Brian and Emily start gossiping about what happened at the last happy hour, you must admit that sometimes you go along to get along. It’s just easier that way, even if it makes you uncomfortable. The problem is that you need to acquire the right tools for every coworker situation you may face - from the gossips to the two who are battling it out for that promotion. You can’t control who you will be around at the office, but you can control how you respond when you have the proper mindset - and instructions. We’ve rounded up the coworkers you might encounter everywhere you go, plus  how to deal  with them in a  productive  way that doesn’t hurt your professional reputation (or your personal wellbeing).1. The person that’s always rightThis type of individual is a dime-a-dozen. They always get the last say in meetings and insist on their opinion. Naturally, others rally behind this behavior because t his person exudes  confidence. Even if their work is messy or inaccurate, the person that’s “always right” will continue to excel because of the authority they project. How to handle them:This behavior is tough to work with. At first, be patient and see how you get along with this person. If stepping on your toes becomes a pattern, speak with them after you’ve had time to reflect on what you want to say.2. The  control freakMuch like the person that loves to be right, the control freak has a very strong  personality. They feel they are important and that they always know the best (and often, only) way to do things. Because of this mentality, others don’t get the chance to show their talents because the control freak is too busy interrupting with the “right way.”How to handle them:Maintain your  professionalism. If there are too many frustrating incidents for you to deal with, plan a time to speak with this co-worker privately when you are calm. Explain why the situation isn’t working well for you, and how it can be fixed so that both parties can work well together.3. The martyrThe martyr is always doing way too much work - every single day! This person keeps their head down and doesn’t ask for much in return.  Thus, they often are forgotten about when it’s time for a promotion. How to handle them:If early in their career, guide them and make sure they call attention to the work that they do for recognition and praise.4. The duo that fights for controlThis is two or more employees that are in a fight for power over a situation. One always wants to be in control and right. This duo may consist of two alpha personalities, and they love to one-up each other. How to handle them:If you find yourself fighting for power, then take a step back. Recognize that you can get farther by working as a team. Draw strengths from your co-workers and see these as complementary to yours.5. The queen beeOr, Betty Crocker with a twist. She will smile to your face, but as soon as you turn your head, she’ll have gossiped about your latest interaction. How to handle them:Avoid gossip about any of your co-workers. It’s best to stay out of sweeping office drama.6. The role modelThis is a shining star and the person you aspire to be like. If you find the role model in your office, make sure they have all the traits of a true role model. How to handle them:Try to emulate their good aspects, recognizing that you also have unique talents also. Ask this person if you are able to shadow them for a day.As I mentioned before, you can only control yourself. One way to expand your ability to handle sticky professional situations? Information on Team Building Strategies

Information on Team Building Strategies Information on Team Building Strategies It is not enough to get your group together off-site and have a few icebreaker games. If you want team building to work, you have to show the members of the team that it benefits them personally. There is very little team in teamwork without a lot of motivation. We live in a society that seems fascinated with individual accomplishment and almost oblivious to teams. Even in team settings like sports, we single out the All-Stars and the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of each game. That is the environment you have to overcome to build your group at work into a team. Get Started Team Building Do you think of your group as a team? They wont think of themselves as a team if you dont. Do you reward team performance or only individual achievements? You wont have much success in team building if you dont reward team performance. Let your group know that they are a team, that you expect them to perform as a team, and that you will reward their successes as a team. Thats the first step toward team building. Remember that team building must be an everyday activity. It is not something you can just do quarterly at some off-site function. Motivate Team Building If you want team building to work, its not enough to tell them that they are a team and must perform as one. You also have to show the members of the team that it benefits them personally.  Most of us are selfish individualists. We watch out, first and foremost, for ourselves and do what benefits us most. We have to be motivated to include anyone else. Fortunately, it is pretty easy for us to see the benefits of including others, so most of us do that readily. Love is a strong motivator. Parents, for instance, watch out for their children. Money is another strong motivator. It is one you can use as an employer. However, the strongest motivator available to a manager (since it is unlikely your employees will fall in love with you) is self-esteem. The more the individual sees a benefit to his or her self-esteem from supporting the team, the more successful your team building efforts will be. First of all, your people have to acknowledge that they are part of a team. You can reinforce this by holding team meetings, posting team news on the bulletin board or your intranet page, and tracking team performance against team goals. Secondly, they have to believe that the team is capable of producing more than the sum of its members. Lance Armstrong is a great bicycle racer, but he could not have won the Tour de France without the support and assistance of his team members. You may have a great customer service rep on your team, but without the cooperation of the other members of the team, he or she would not be able to handle as many calls. You have to make this readily apparent to them and clearly, delineate the increased rewards they can achieve through teamwork. Reinforce Team Building Efforts One company I know had a great customer support team. Their director challenged the team with higher and higher goals. He celebrated their successes in meeting and exceeding those team goals. He also celebrated them as individuals. The team decorated the cubicle of everyone who was having a birthday. They did community service projects together. They had fun at work. And they enjoyed beating the goals Clint set for their team. They got a significant boost in self-esteem from belonging to a winning team. Making up t-shirts, etc. with a team logo or motto can help reinforce the sense of team identity, but its not required. You should know your team well enough to know whether or not something like that would be positive reinforcement for them. Dont make the mistake of one Accounting Manager I knew. The motto he picked for his team and had printed on ballcaps he gave them didnt fly. He hadnt involved the team in selecting either the motto or the object on which it was printed. Team Building Exercises and Icebreakers I recommend you develop your team building exercises  where possible. No outside consulting company knows your company culture as well as you do. You can do a variety of exercises or play a variety of sports. I have built successful team building exercises around  golf (for non-golfers)  and  bowling. Another currently popular team building exercise is Paintball. Abouts Paintball Guide explains the basics with these articles. Here are some additional resources to help you craft your exercises:Creative Icebreakers, Introductions, and HellosFrom Business Training Works, details of 15 exercises from which to choose.TV-based Team Building EventsAmerican Outback Adventures Events offers team building events including several based on popular TV programs. If you do decide to go outside for consultant help, here are a couple of ideas:City ChallengeCity Challenge conducts this orienteering-based exercise in over a dozen cities, primarily in the UK and Europe. The Lost Dutchmans Gold MinePerformance Management Companys classic game is one of my favorite collaboration exercises.Ropes Courses  Here are a variety of rope courses offered by Adventure Associates. Team Building Consultants I recommend you develop your team building exercises whenever possible. No outside consulting company knows your  company culture  as well as you do. However, if you choose to use outside consultants, many can be found on the Internet. I have never used any of these consultants, so I cant recommend them personally, but their  websites  indicate that they understand the need and can provide the products and services you need. Simply Speaking, Inc.I like the description of their Building Positively Stellar Teams program because it gets everyone on their feet making it easier to get participation in an event.Murder MysteryThey have a separate section just for corporate events.EventusThis is a UK firm. 5 Excel Skills You Need to Become a Fanatic Like Me

5 Excel Skills You Need to Become a Fanatic Like Me 5 Excel Skills You Need to Become a Fanatic Like Me If you have even the slightest attachment to the world of finance, it behooves you to boost or simply reboot your Microsoft Excel skills from time to time. After nearly a decade in the world of accounting and finance, during which I’ve hopped from jobs in audit, valuation, equity research and transaction advisory, I’ve found a number of shortcuts to creating and maintaining great financial models with Excel. While the following list of Excel tips is brief, I think there are three important themes readers should take away: First, there will always be more than one way to solve a problem using Excel. Second, working faster by using shortcuts provides more time for review and formatting. Third, this is an iterative software that changes over time, so don’t be complacent with your current habits. Sixty-nine percent of U.S. companies and 78 percent of small companies interviewed for the Benchmarking the Accounting Finance Function from Robert Half and the Financial Executives Research Foundation said they use Excel for budgeting and long-range planning. Here are five ways to put your Excel skills to work so you can do your best work in accounting and finance: 1. Hunting for selective criteria Instead of messily filtering or sorting your data, consider these functions, which are much friendlier and less cumbersome than clunky Pivot Tables: Use Sumifs() to sum certain fields based on multiple conditions. The parameters are quick to set up and change on the fly. Sumifs(A:A, B:B, C1) sums the cells in column A only if the adjacent cell in column B is equal to the content of cell C1. Use Countif() to count the instances of a particular condition. For example, Countif(A:A,A1) tells you how many times A1 appears in column A. If the output is more than 1, you know it is a duplicate. Use Index() combined with Match() to find the position and value of a cell within a 2 dimensional grid matrix. Consider a 6x5 grid (6 down, 5 over) defined over the area A1:E6, where the top-most row contains unique names (Joey, Jimmy, Tommy, Timmy in B1:E1), the left-most column are ages (11,12,13,14,15 in A2:A6), and the rest of the matrix is filled with the boys’ heights at different ages. To look up Tommy’s height at age 12, for example, you would use the Match() function to find the relative position of the name Tommy in the top row (4th) and the relative position of 12 in the left column (3rd) as inputs to the function Index (A1:E6,3,4), which would output Tommy’s height at age 12. Use Vlookup() to quickly find related fields on the same row. This takes the form Vlookup(D1,A1:B300,2,FALSE), and looks up the value of a cell in column B that is on the same row as the row where the value of D1 is positioned in column A. 2. Abnormal cash flow modeling Another of the Excel skills many seasoned users still employ is the Irr() function to calculate internal rates of return, but there’s a superior function in the standard menu Excel now offers. With Xirr(), you can incorporate the timing of cash flows, which are rarely evenly distributed in the real world, into your calculation. The other benefit of Xirr() is that it yields an annualized rate. Contrast this with the Irr() function, which outputs a rate over the narrow period between cash flows. The Irr() function then requires multiplication or compounding to determine the annual rate, the more intuitive periodic rate used to analyze investment returns. 3. Playing the strings The following functions should never be forgotten, especially if you need to parse a database full of complex unique identifiers. For example, if you had a text string “A122016” in cell A1, and you knew the first character identifies an account (“A” for Amortization), the next two characters identifies the month, and the last four characters reveals the year, you could pull out the following: Use the function Right(A1,4) to pull out the year Use Left(A1,1) to capture the account Use Mid(2,2) to find the month Use Concatenate() to tie strings together, such as Concatenate(Left(A1,1),Right(A1,4)) produces “A2016” Use Len() to count the number of characters in the string; that is, Len(A1) outputs 7 4. Avoiding the mouse Generally, it is faster to keep your fingers glued to the keyboard rather than slowly moving your hand to and from the mouse. Your Excel skills will be enhanced if you remember that the keyboard has more to offer you than just a 26-letter alphabet. Use the arrows, the spacebar, the F keys, Page Up/Down, Control, Shift, Tab, Alt, brackets and plus/minus keys. Use these in a host of combinations and be masterfully efficient. Moving between cells: Hold the Control key and use the arrows to jump between empty and non-empty cells. Moving between tabs: Use Control with Page Up/Down Moving between workbooks: Use Alt-Tab Highlighting: Use Control-Space to highlight columns and Shift-Space to highlight rows. Inserting: Control-Shift-Plus Tracing dependents: Control-[ Changing decimals: Alt-H-0 to add, Alt-H-9 to remove Underlining with a bottom border: Alt-H-B-O, or ALt-H-B-U for double underlying Aligning cells: Alt-H-A-C for center alignment and Alt-H-A-R for right alignment Auto-adjusting row heights and column widths: Alt-H-O-A for height and Alt-H-O-I for width. F keys: F2 to edit cell contents, F4 to lock a cell reference or to repeat your last command, F5 to return to your original source after tracing dependents (see above for shortcut), F9 to calculate manually, and F12 to save a new version of you workbook. Print views: Alt-F-V for a preview. Use Alt-P-R-S to set print area. Grouping and collapsing: Never hide rows, unless you want to frustrate anyone else who uses your workbook. Use Alt-A-G-G to group, then Alt-A-H to collapse. Changing calculation setting to manual: This will speed up your modeling if you have lots of data in the workbook. Go to File-Options-Formulas, then select Manual. Changing colors: Alt-H-F-C to quickly navigate to color menu Conditional formatting: Alt-H-L-N 5. Keeping it simple and easy to modify I’ve noticed many of the articles on the Internet boast of the capabilities offered by Excel’s Pivot Tables, Goal Seek macro, Indirect() function, and Data Tables. While useful in a handful of situations, I’ve always found them to be less useful when sharing models with others. Indirect() makes tracing dependents (to check the source of the data) very difficult. Pivot Tables are clumsy, Goal Seek is hard to replicate quickly, and Data Tables are truly wonderful for one thing: slowing down (and crashing) your workbook. Excel is the most important piece of software for many of us. Every few years, Microsoft modifies Excel’s suite of features and functions, so it is easy to lose your competitive edge to the younger cohort of analysts and accountants. I hope these tips help as a refresher or as confirmation that you are up-to-date on the new tricks and abreast of the best of the old ones.
