Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom Gartner Unpacks Business Disruption
Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Gartner Unpacks Business Disruption I recently had the opportunity to attend a webinar on businessdisruptionhosted by Gartner VP and Fellow Daryl Plummer. Plummer shared how to understand disruptive influences and focused on the disruptions to which we arenât yet paying attention. According to Plummer, disruption used to come out of nowhere (i.e. the Internet), and it was isolated in pockets. In 2017, however, itâs everywhere, having massive impacts across a large area. We canât avoid it even if we wanted to. While itâs normal to have some disruption fatigue (otherwise known as getting mentally exhausted every time you hear the word digital), mastery of digital disruption is a critical discipline for modern success. The most celebrated organizations in this decade (Amazon, Google, etc.) have done so well because theyâve created new lanes to run in. They have embraced willful disruption, which Plummer defined as deliberate and aggressive use of disruption as a differentiator for digital success. They understand that every disruption will inevitably be disrupted by something else, so they canât rest on their laurels. Willful disruption has five types: Offensive:Innovation, or creating something no one else has thought of (Apple and the smartphone). Defensive:Competition, or recognizing that something major is happening and that we need to do something about it (Googleâs involvement with Android in response to the iPhone). Serendipity:Chance, letâs get 1,000 flowers to bloom and see what develops (Twitter and its hashtag changing the face of news delivery). Destruction:Anarchistic, or destroying and replacing a market (Netflix vs. the DVD market). Self-Disruption:Reinvention andagility, coming up with something better than what youâve already invented yourself (Appleâs transition from the iPod to the iPhone). For more on Gartners predicted disruptions, read the full post on the QuickBase Fast Track blog.

What Do Famous People Think - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
What Do Famous People Think - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career On SNL last Saturday night, we had three Mark Zuckerbergs, only one of which is actually the FB/Social Network god/demon himself. The cinema Zuckerberg, Jesse Eisenberg and the SNL Zuckerberg, Andy Samberg landed on stage with Zuck himself. Your brand extensions So, there he stood with the least flattering versions of himself. Could you keep your composure if that happened to you? Does a $40 billion valuation take the sting out of it? Perhaps, but Zuckerberg is as human as you and me, so it must have made his heart pound (or his blood boil) just a bit. It made me wonder how much control over your personal brand remains, the more important or famous you become. It made me clearer than ever that there is no privacy now (and that was before Zuckâs FB page was hacked), and that more and more people know you â" and can interpret you, from the pastiche you put up all over Internet. Do you control your brand? How would it be if someone or several people played you? Maybe not exactly you, but the lampoon of you â" or the dark side of you? I bet you think no one knows the really dark side. Except that everyone has a really dark side, and because we have ours, we know you have yours. Nearly everyone also believes that they will be âfound out.â Donât you have that feeling you are overreaching and underperforming, and it will be unmasked at some horrible moment when weâll see you for who you really are? Are you afraid we will feel disappointed or infuriated or shocked? That despite your tailored suit, your underwear has holes in it? Almost every great person I get to know in business and media is self-conscious about something. It ranges from not having graduated college to not making their first billion before they were twenty-five. Some believe that the whole house of cards upon which they built their career will collapse at some inopportune time. I have to say that if there is a recurrent theme among highly visible people I know, it is these two inner demons. One: they have a dark side to hide, and two: they have a deep fear that they arent who we think they are. For example, a man recently found out he is not really the anchor and editor of a big news program. No, not Dan Rather, much more recent than that. Our friend Keith Olbermann found out just minutes (or perhaps days) before, that Friday, January 21, 2011 was his last show on MSNBC. He waited until the end of the broadcast to let us know. Having scuffled with his network for years, this wasnât a great surprise. But, the shock of no longer being who you are, is nonetheless a shock. Soon SNL will have someone play Olbermann, there might even be a movie, and there perhaps there will be Keith himself on stage with his doppelgangers. After Zuckerbergâs appearance perhaps that is a triumph. A mark of having really made it as a personal brand. Keith has a dark side. He thinks about who is the worst person in the world each day, and has put up that dayâs winner on his show, day and day. So what do those maligned people think now, now that Keith has been fired? Perhaps Keith thinks it was worth it. A trade for telling it like it is, being authentically who he is. Did he overreach â" did he not have the clout or capital he leveraged to express his opinion? Did he get found out and put out? I donât think so. The NBC corporate brand is changing with the new acquisition, and Keiths bombastic and partisan personal brand really doesnât sync up with the new normal. Brand doppelgangers We feel no pity for Zuckerberg and we donât need to feel any for Olbermann. We know who they are, through not only our own eyes but also those who revile them or at least make fun of them â" and they are each doing just fine. At least, that is what they will say. Personal brands, anything that makes you self-conscious is not worth worrying about. Anything you think you are hiding, likely you are not. And, we will still like you, hire you, and even admire you (even more) when you will drop your guard and get human with us. Perhaps the best thing we all could wish for you is this: see you on the big screen and the small one, too. Along with those who would seek to imitate you. And yet for all the lookalikes: you be you. Remain inimitable, as you are when you are an authentic personal brand. Author: Nance Rosen is the author of Speak Up! Succeed. Why Social Engagement is Key to Recruitment
Why Social Engagement is Key to Recruitment We speak to Chad MacRae who is a recruiting leader and design thinker with over twelve years of experience in talent acquisition. He is the founder of Recruiting Social, a recruiting services company that supports talent teams across North America and donates 10% of profits to education charities. He has found talent in 45 countries (Including the U.S., Canada, Greece, the U.A.E, and Afghanistan) and provided recruiting strategy to top organizations including OpenX, Hearts Science (an Omnicom company), Grindr, Rubicon Project, and Activision. Why do candidates want to work with you? Aside from working with some of the best workplaces in North America, my design thinking background has equipped me to really understand the candidate perspective, paint an exciting and honest story about the organization, and deliver a positive candidate experience. What talent challenges are you faced with? Getting hiring managers to consider candidates with alternative backgrounds and qualifications â" i.e., diversity. How do you communicate and activate this? Itâs important to get leadership, as well as all employees, directly involved â" seeing the potential of people with different experiences, and building an inclusive workplace. For example, to help one of our global tech clients become more transgender-inclusive, we partnered with a local organization called TransCanWork. Every employee completed their training program and spent time learning from members of the trans community about this untapped pool of talent. Best source of hire? You need a mix: employee referrals deliver faster time-to-performance. Sourced candidates present greater diversity and attract people you may not otherwise get. What initiatives are you particularly proud of? Last year, Recruiting Social was a named a Top 25 Most Socially Engaged Staffing Agency by LinkedIn. What hard lessons can you share with us? Anyone whoâs started a business (like a recruitment company) has considered hiring a friend or family member. Iâve done this, more than once. But you need to really sit down and consider your business plan. Can that friend/family member help you get where you aim to go? Hire the person who will help you get there, not the person who is easiest to hire or most immediately available. What are the most common mistakes you see recruiters make? Not giving feedback to a declined candidate. You never know. That person might not be the right hire now, but they might be the right hire for a future opening. Candidates remember a good â" and bad! â" experience. Iâve had candidates hired who, ten plus years earlier, Iâd declined! And yeah, they remembered their earlier (positive) experience with me. Whatâs your tech stack? The list: ATS + Candidate Texting: CATS Reporting : PGAdmin PostgreSQL tool or Tableau for larger datasets Scraper: Data Miner AI Sourcing Tool: Hiretual Social Sourcing: LinkedIn Recruiter, Facebook, and Instagram Job Board: AngelList, BuiltInLA Project Management: Asana Web browser tab suspender: The Great Suspender Calendar: Appointlet Internal Communication: Slack Team Collaboration: Donut What are your top 3 tips for recruiters? Never stop learning. Go to conferences outside of the HR/Recruiting industry. Consider how you can contribute beyond the typical, req-to-offer hiring process. Who inspires you and why? Netflix I love all the video content they are doing, combining their consumer and employer brands. Check out #FirstTimeISawMe, an interview series with Netflix employees talking about the first time they saw themselves represented in a Netflix Original. Also, the #SheRules content highlights some of the women that work at Netflix and how they impact the work done at the company. Whatâs up next for recruiting? AI: There are a lot of tools that will help with sourcing and screening candidates and we will continue to see a rise in use and adaptation with agencies and in-house recruiters. Scenarios Planning: Internal recruiting will continue to solidify their seat at the table with leaders and build their consultative approach. Organizations will have to move from a âforecasting headcountâ culture to true scenarios planning, where they map out current state to future scenarios based on environmental factors. New Collar: When we look at talent, we will see continued growth of âNew Collarâ hiring. With coding boot camps and accreditations from organizations such as the General Assembly, we are going to see some organizations relax their narrow expectations of what school candidates went to and other illogical qualifications. Especially in more aggressive markets! Connect with Chad on LinkedIn.

I could dance I am so happy! - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
I could dance I am so happy! - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I just got an email update from Pixel Peony, who, as I previosuly blogged about, found that being positive opened some new doors for her: I never expected that a retail job would lead to meeting the owner of a company. Literally, it was all due to treating people well and having a good attitude. I?m convinced. I was pleasantly surprised by the lengths people will go when they like you and like the way that you work. The whole experience taught me not to take a ?little? job for granted, or to take the people you work with for granted. Everything counts. Well she now has a new, exciting job and wrote to tell me about it, ending with this gem of a motto: Hard work, a positive attitude, thank you cards and a few bouquets of flowers and voila! I could dance I am so happy! Woo-hooooo :o) Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. How to Write a Resume - Tips That Can Help You
How to Write a Resume - Tips That Can Help YouA resume writing service in Janesville, WI can save you a lot of time and stress if you are worried about coming up with something that is perfect. The following tips will help you to think of different ideas before you start writing your resume.Think about different skill sets you have: in other words, think about different skill sets that might be useful to you. If you can prove that you have some experience that can give you an edge in your new career, then do not write the resume yourself.Remember, it is not what you write, but how you speak that will speak the most. When you are writing a resume, be sure that you use the right grammar and spelling when you write down your information.Use relevant examples of writing: writing is a skill; however, when you are writing a resume, it is very important that you choose relevant examples. You will find some examples in magazines, on the internet and other places where you can learn from. The re are also very good books that can teach you how to write a resume.Be sure that your examples are appropriate for the job you want: examples are important, but you have to make sure that they are appropriate for the job you want. For example, if you are applying for a clerical position, you will want to write an example of writing for a person who only holds clerical jobs. Another example would be a person who has a legal education or who has recently graduated from a law school. It is also important to keep your work history simple: while you may need to go into a little detail, keep it simple and uncomplicated. If you are looking at a college degree, do not write about a bachelor's degree; instead, write abouta master's degree. It is a better practice to write about a bachelor's degree from a school in the area you want to work in than to write about a master's degree from a college that you did not attend.Give your resume proper and appropriate attention: do not go over your wri ting with more detail than necessary. Do not end a paragraph abruptly. Consider these tips when you are writing your resume. The best way to ensure that you are able to write an effective resume is to find a professional writing service in Janesville, WI. A professional can help you out by coming up with different examples of writing and teaching you how to edit your resume. These services are available online or from local businesses.
